The following was printed in the Church History section of the Deseret News on May 1, 1971.

 

1855

May 5, Salt Lake City — “The first official Church work was performed in the Endowment House, on a fine and frosty morning, May 5, 1855,” according to the Journal History of the Church.

 

Five men and three women appeared at 8 a.m. to receive their endowments.  They were James Cooper, Joseph Sharp Rawlings, William Crestfield Moody, Robert Francis Nelsen, John Alexander Richards, Hannah Cooper, Elizabeth Cannon and Mary Rawlins.
